dc.description.abstractExisting literature on the risk factors associated with violence accepts the notion that a person’s experiences throughout their history can indirectly impact upon violent behaviour. Additionally, research into risk factors associated with violence is primarily conducted using quantitative methodology. The aim of the current study was to qualitatively explore the knowledge and understanding of staff, who work in potentially violent healthcare settings, surrounded by the contributing factors of violence and aggression. Five members of staff from a secure rehabilitation unit were recruited for the research. The study utilised a qualitative design, collecting data via semi-structured interviews which were analysed using a thematic analysis. From the analysis, four main themes emerged, these were: Triggers, Emotions, Violence and Communication. The themes were identified as either contributory components of violence, the manifestation of violence or the methods of deescalating a violent situation. There appeared to be a pertinent focus upon aspects which immediately resulted in violent behaviour with acknowledgement of the historical influences highlighted throughout past literature. The need for future research was emphasised as it would benefit from exploring the less recognised short term causes of violence and to gain further depth into the possible causes of violent behaviour from varying healthcare providers.en_US
