Cybercrime is continually growing in today’s technological world. It is vital for individuals in the UK to be more aware of cyber security and privacy policies. Research into the UK population’s understanding on cyber security and privacy policies is not common, and with cybercrime increasing and privacy issues becoming more apparent, it is crucial that the awareness of the UK population’s understanding is investigated. The first area the research project will discuss is the current government legislations in place that aid in preventing cybercrime, such as the Data Protection Act 1998 and the Computer Misuse Act 1990. An analysis of the National Cyber Security Centre’s strategies in preventing cybercrime will be included to uncover whether the changes they are implementing will benefit the UK population in terms of combatting cyberattacks. The main aim of the research project is to investigate the awareness of cyber security and privacy policies amongst the UK population. This will be met through the current literature of the research topic as well as undertaking qualitative and quantitative research for data using online questionnaires. This research project uncovered that individuals are not aware of the government legislations in place to prevent cybercrime, or how to prevent cybercrime themselves. This research project also discovered that individuals lack the information they require to understand the use of privacy policies used by businesses and organisations. The outcome of this research project has allowed for a future development that aims to help educate individuals regarding cyber security and privacy policies.
