The vast growth of technology, and in particular social media, has become a large part of an individual’s life. Social media attracts a wide variety of audiences, and can impact individuals in different ways. There are numerous studies on the potential positive and negative impact of social media on mental health and wellbeing, but there is very little research in regards to the perceived impact of social media on University students, in particular Cardiff Metropolitan University students. This study aims to find a connection between social media use, and its perceived impact on Cardiff Metropolitan University students’ mental health. Current research demonstrates a link between social media and mental health, but does not provide a definitive answer. As young adults, including students, are the highest social media users, it is important to address social media’s link with mental health, as this is an increasing risk. It is unclear regarding the extent of social media’s impact on mental health, therefore, this study aims to view the perceived impact of social media on their mental health. This research looks deeper into the subject, and aims to identify which social media sties are used by students, and how they believe it to be impacting on others and their mental well-being. For a successful research paper, appropriate literature will be gathered and reviewed. This will be compared with the data collection, which will be unique and relevant to build a discussion which will grow towards a strong conclusion. This will determine whether the use of social media really does have a positive or negative perceived impact on the mental health of Cardiff Metropolitan University students.
