Many studies in the sport psychology literature have identified growth but it is important that growth researchers are transparent in respect of the theories that underpin their research to provide greater coherence between how terms are conceptualized, operationalized, and theorized. We argue for a move from the mere description of growth to more detailed theoretical explanations of the processes that lead to, and the factors that influence, the experience and consequences of growth. This chapter provides a useful starting point to develop theoretically informed, high quality research that will foster a rich and diverse understanding of the growth following adversity landscape that we have encouraged in this book. To facilitate this we provide (a) an overview of the theoretical paradigms that have informed the development of theories and models as this is often absent from discussions around theory in both sport psychology and the wider literature, and (b) a clear description and critique of each theory or model which includes an appraisal of how each of them has been used by sport psychology researchers to date.en_US
