The period covered by this thesis saw the establishment in Britain of a distinct area of practice which has become known as studio pottery. This is also the era when modernism emerged as the pre-eminent tendency in British visual culture. The intention of this thesis is not to equate the concerns of the studio potters with the concerns of modernism, but it does argue for a broader perspective than that to which a narrow modernist versus traditionalist debate inevitably leads. [The softback version of the thesis contains hand written comments by David Leach].
