Case studies of advanced manufacturing technology implementation in small companies

The data within this paper results from collaboration with ten manufacturing companies that provided case study material for the research. The objective of the paper was to compare the positive and negative impacts of technology adoption in the case study companies. This cross-case analysis resulted in the identification of areas of concern for small company managers when implementing technology, and provided three areas for consideration by managers when planning future investment. Much research conducted on the implementation and management of technology in manufacturing concentrates on large companies. The significance of this research is its contribution towards understanding issues faced by small companies in managing design and manufacturing technologies. The research indicates that the issues and important factors affecting small companies are different to those indicated by the literature as relevant to larger organisations. Further, the research highlighted limitations in the research method, resulting in plans for a further round of case-study data gathering with the aim of developing mechanisms to aid companies in achieving the benefits associated with technology adoption.
