The computer aided design and rapid prototyping of removable partial denture frameworks

This represents part of an on-going research project undertaken by the Medical Applications Group (MAG) of PDR in the application of advanced design techniques for the needs of the dental technology industry; in particular the design and manufacture of Removable Partial Denture Frameworks (RPDs). This publication explored the application of 3D computer-aided design (CAD) and rapid prototyping (RP) in the process of electronically surveying a digitally scanned dental cast and producing an entire sacrificial pattern for a removable partial denture metal alloy framework. This study progresses from previous work in that the sacrificial pattern was created using several rapid prototyping methods, so that comparisons could be made upon their relative strengths and weaknesses. Electronic surveying was undertaken using advanced 3D CAD software to develop new techniques in designing a custom fitting framework, ensuring established dental technology principles were adhered to for a functional fit. Several rapid prototyping technologies were used to produce sacrificial patterns, allowing comparisons to be made on their accuracy and part strength. The most suitable pattern was then cast in Cobalt Chrome to establish accuracy of fit on the original patient cast. This paper demonstrated that CAD and RP techniques can be used for electronic dental cast analysis, preparation, design and production of RPD frameworks. Techniques undertaken in this research facilitated subsequent research to refine the process and also made significant impact in the commercial dental sector (such as in Dental Technologies, issue 70).
