Use of CAD/CAM technology to fabricate a removable partial denture framework

This research formed part of a long-term research project in the design and manufacture of Removable Partial Denture Frameworks (PRDs) undertaken by PDR-MAG. This paper represents the most recent stage of research in computer-aided design (CAD) and rapid prototyping (RP) of RPDs. This research progressed by producing digital designs directly into cobalt chrome alloy without using casting. The RP method used to produce the RPD was Selective Laser Melting (SLM). Directly producing the RPD into metal alloy via SLM removed lengthy stages of pattern production and casting; representing the completion of an entire digital process. Clinical fitting of the framework demonstrated potential commercial application of the techniques developed, and discussions on future developments were concluded. This work builds on previous work (Williams outputs 1, 2 and 3 and Bibb output 4) and represents the culmination of several stages of RDP design and demonstrates that RPD frameworks can be produced using CAD and RP methods to clinical specifications. This research is being utilised by dental technologists. Williams conducted the research, organised the collaboration, provided knowledge on designing RPD framework to clinical standards, and undertook finishing and polishing procedures. Collis, a Consultant Dentist, undertook the fitting the framework to the patient and ensuring clinical acceptability. Eggbeer contributed to the CAD stage and Bibb provided SLM expertise. This research has led to growing commercial interest in producing RPDs using RP methods. The work reported has been replicated by researchers in China and commercial dental technologists.
