The relationship between jump testing in badminton and on-court jumping drills in elite badminton players

The purpose of this study was to identify if there was a relationship between jump testing for badminton players on and off a badminton court. Research has shown that fitness testing should be specific to the particular sport and there is little literature in relation to badminton in this area. Jumping had been used by previous studies but no evidence had been shown to how this relates to a badminton game (Hughes and Bopf, 2005; Hughes, 2006). Eleven Welsh Elite Badminton players volunteered to be participants of this study. Seven male players (mean ± SD: age 24 ± 4.7 yr, height 180.9 ± 4.3 cm, weight 81.2 ± 6.5 kg) and four female players (age 21.8 ± 1.7 yr, height 164.0 ± 1.2 cm, weight 62.6± 9.3 kg) completed a series of different jump tests for badminton players. This study used a cross-over design in which the subjects completed different tests on two separate occasions. In one testing session they performed three different ‘laboratory’ or off-court jump tests, these included Squat Jump, Countermovement with racket arm raise jump and Rebound jump. These jump heights were measure on a SmartSpeed Jump mat. The other session consisted of two different badminton on-court drills used in training. The two drills were maximum jump smash height and smash and drive. The Optojump system was placed on the badminton court to measure the jump heights of the on-court drills. The two on-court jump test results were found to have significant relationships between all three of the different off-court jump tests used in this study. The strongest of these relationships was between maximum jump smash and countermovement jump with arm raise, which had a correlation coefficient of r=0.907. The results seem to be effected by the jump smash technique of the player and external factors during the on-court jumps. The results of the study attribute to the overall importance of jump testing for elite badminton players and this can be applied into coaching contexts. This is an important aspect to look at when forming a fitness testing battery for elite badminton players.
