dc.description.abstractThe aim of the study was to develop a windsurf-specific ergometer to test the pump action in windsurfing. The study investigated the peak physiological effects of sail pumping and compared them to data obtained from a VO2peak arm crank ergometer test. This was conducted to examine whether arm crank ergometry could be used to assess valid peak physiological measures in windsurfers. The study consisted of two windsurf pump VO2peak tests on the right and left hand side and an arm crank VO2peak test. Six male windsurf participants volunteered for the study. The peak physiological variables recorded and compared between the tests were Heart rate (beats.min-1), RER, VCO2 (ml.min-1), VO2 (ml.kg-1.min-1), VE (l•min-1) and V02(kg.ml-1). The study found that there was no significant difference (P≤0.05) between the right hand and left hand pump action and also the left hand pump action and arm crank ergometry. The only significant difference (P≤0.05) was found between the right hand pump action and arm crank ergometry. The results demonstrated that the windsurf ergometer appears to be a valid, sport-specific means by which to assess peak aerobic power.en_GB
