This paper discusses action research conducted as part of a Professional Doctorate in Ecological Building Practices (DEBP) research project. Les Moueux, a hamlet situated in rural Calvados, France is being used as a case study. The authors argue that the 'Transition Model' developed by (Hopkins et al 2008) offers a positive and inclusive way of planning practical solutions for a community's response to climate change and peak oil. The action research experiment consisted of introducing the ‘Transition Movement’ ideology to the tenants residing at Les Moueux, through the screening of the 'In Transition 1.0' film. After the film, the first author organised the residents, their invited friends and associates into groups, in order to discuss and debate how the hamlet could be developed on a more socially equitable, environmentally durable and yet affordable path. The paper discusses the results of the discussion groups, which resulted in the attendees participating enthusiastically in the visioning exercises and working towards the objective of beneficial change for Les Moueux. All participants were encouragingly motivated, and useful written data was captured from the ideas suggested within each group. It was pleasing to observe highly participative and productive nature of the discussion and debate. Furthermore, the results culminating from the action research experiment provided an outline of the issues, objectives, risks and limitations that need to be considered by the residents of the hamlet, as they further explore their ideas for applying the core principles of the Transition Movement to their own lives, families and homes.
