Performance analysis of the Nage Waza characteristics in current Elite Contest Judo

The purpose of this study was to analyze the nage waza attacking characteristics of current elite contest judo and test the relationship between attack rate and victory. The hypothesis was that a higher attack rate than your opponent would lead to victory. A hand notation system was utilized to collect data from video footage of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. One hundred and forty contests were notated, ten from each genders weight category. Techniques were identified and categorized using the Go Kyo system and the traditional classification system. Any executed techniques that were not present in the Go Kyo were classified as "other". The main results of the statistical analysis were: (1) 59.3% of contests were won by the judoka who attacked the most frequently, (2) a domination of te waza techniques, ashi waza techniques and techniques classified as "other", almost equally accounting for 75% of all executed techniques, (3) techniques classified as "other" and sutemi waza techniques were the most effective technique types, (4) counter attacks and combination attacks are significantly more effective than simple attacks. This study concluded that attack rate can be used as an indicator of successful performance, with an average attack rate of three attacks per minute to guide practice. An increase in the frequency of techniques classified as "other" over the years was indentified and accounted to the process of coaches and judoka innovatively developing new unorthodox techniques, using them to catch their opponents off guard. The importance of counter and combination attacks is outlined, with emphasis on the suitability of ashi waza techniques for combination attacks and the importance of not only learning counter attacks but measures to avoid them also. Some differences between genders and their individual weight categories were identified, however this needs to be tested further in order for firm conclusions to be drawn.
