Abstract
Eight cricket coaches agreed to be interviewed regarding the development of mental toughness. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to elicit the coaches’ perceptions of how mental toughness is developed in players during the middle phase of their careers (13-19). The study was based around Jones et al.’s (2007) mental toughness framework and the coaches were questioned regarding the four dimensions and 13 sub-components. Findings revealed a number of underlying mechanisms that develop each of the 13 sub-components of Jones et al.’s (2007) framework. The mechanisms that influence mental toughness development included: a positive mindset, a good coach-athlete relationship, goal-setting, mental preparation, effective communication, competitive experiences, a pre-performance routine, a focused mindset, player initiative, challenge, education, competitiveness, a positive training atmosphere and a post-match routine. Practical implications highlight the importance of coach education programs that provide coaches with knowledge and understanding to enhance their coaching expertise. Also, coaches should include a pre-performance routine, to ensure players know their roles and responsibilities, and a post-match routine, which allows time for analysis and reflection. Future avenues for research are also discussed.
