The purpose of this study was to identify factors that lower sport confidence for team sport players, and expand upon previous research (Hays, Thomas, Maynard, and Bawden, 2009) by using an alternative athlete sample. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight non-elite competitive team sport players (4 male football players and 4 female netball players) to determine the factors that caused a lack in sport confidence. Qualitative data was analysed using a mixture of inductive and deductive content analysis, which led to the identification of twelve confidence debilitating factors. These were categorised as poor preparation, poor performance, psychological factors, performance expectations and pressure, coach/ manager, team, opposition, physical self presentation, experience, injury, external factors and athlete specific factors. Results indicated that all athletes experienced a loss of confidence due to poor preparation, poor performance, psychological factors and performance expectations and pressure. Several gender differences were found, for example males reported that they lost confidence due to the opposition, experience and injury, whereas females stated a dip in confidence from the coach/ manager, physical self presentation and athlete specific factors. Theoretical implications show an overlap with confidence debilitating factors identified in previous research. Findings also suggest that confidence debilitating factors share similarities with sources of sport confidence and self-efficacy. Practically, findings indicate the need for sport psychologists to work alongside athletes and coaches to help recognise confidence debilitating factors, in order to develop interventions that could minimise their negative affects upon sport confidence. Additional research is required to further understand confidence debilitating factors in other sports and ability samples.
