IDENTIFICATION OF KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS IN RUGBY SEVENS AND MEASUREMENT OF THEIR IMPACT ON PERFORMANCE

Match analysis in Rugby Sevens has had very little research undertaken. In the past decade only a handful of studies have taken place, therefore it was decided to identify the key performance indicators and measure the impact that they had on performance. The performance indicators were identified through previous research and the annual IRB reviews. Post analysis of 11 matches all involving Wales was undertaken from the 2009 Rugby Sevens World Cup and the Edinburgh stage of the 2009/10 World Sevens Series, using Sportscode to record every action performed by the teams.
Intra-observer reliability procedure were conducted on the system, and then tested for their reliability using the Kappa test. The results demonstrated very good strengths of agreement throughout the study, with one exception, which registered a good strength of agreement.
Non-parametric statistical measures, the Wilcoxon Signed Ranked test reported that significant differences for turnovers, passes, conversions and conversion of possession to tries, (p>0.05), however rucks, kicks, conversions missed, possessions and rucks to possessions proved insignificant between the winning and losing teams. The only significant difference between Wales and the Opposition was passes (p>0.05), all the other indicators proved insignificant.
In conclusion winning teams proved to be superior in their use of possession, firstly in retaining the ball for long periods, and secondly in converting that possession into tries. The successful sides had a mean of 55% and a territorial advantage of 58% over unsuccessful sides.
