The aim of the present study was to establish norms of possession and turnovers in Cardiff and District League Netball. The underlying principle was to analyse 24 netball matches. Percentile values were determined by comparing raw scores against teams at different levels. Results identified whether norms were low, average or high in comparison of their relative performance profiles (O’Donoghue et al., 2008). Quality of Opposition influenced team performance in different ways. Norms of possession and turnovers were extensively influenced by Top Half teams but not for Bottom Half Teams. Top Half teams generally achieved a significantly (<0.05) higher percentage of all turnovers. However the Bottom Half Teams capitalised from a significantly (<0.05) higher percentage of frees, penalties and toss ups when performing against teams at their own level. Normative values were used as a basis of comparison to identify ways in which quality of opposition influenced performance. Coaches can utilise this information to identify strengths and weaknesses within team performance. Furthermore normative values can be used as a motivational tool to optimise performance. Constructive feedback will have a positive effect upon learning and success rate in sport (Hoffman, 2006). Recommendations for future research could aim to establish norms of possession and turnovers in a variety of netball divisions over a longer period of time.
