dc.description.abstractShooting within basketball is the ultimate way in which a team wins or loses a game, yet there has been little research into the biomechanics of shooting and what techniques may be most successful. The aim of the investigation was to investigate the influence of shooting technique on accuracy of female post and guard players. Within this two questions were addressed: 1) what specific joint kinematics differences are there between post and guard players when shooting from different distances? 2) What effects do the joint kinematics have on performance, for example are guards more or less successful than posts? An independent group analysis was completed in which participants (5 posts and 5 guards) completed five shots from both two and three point shooting distances. Angular velocity and displacement data was collected using Codamotion software. Data was analysed using a two sample t-test (p≤0.05). It was found that guards were more successful than posts from both shooting distances with significant differences mainly occurring when shooting from the two point distance and the angular displacements at the hip (guards 19.62± 12.38, posts 36.25± 15.61) and elbow (guards 102.37± 17.40, posts 85.46± 6.75). Due to the few differences occurring when shooting from the three point distance it was therefore concluded the coaches should encourage all players to shoot from greater distances.
