dc.description.abstractThe aim of the study was to investigate the types of instructional behaviour used by coaches, highlighting the impact of the behaviour type and the impact that they have on contextual issues that the coach may face when coaching performers. Through a review of the literature and a mixed methods approach to data collection the study used one experienced coach participant from a soccer background. Data was collected over a sustained period of time utilising observations and an interview with the coach to expand findings affecting player development. The key themes from the data collection were the importance of utilising a range of instructional behaviour. The use of demonstrations and questioning along with feedback and observations formed a rationale for the coach to deliver structured and progressive sessions. When faced with a contextual issue in the coaching environment the significance of a coaching philosophy was underlined. Based on past experiences over a nine year coaching career the coach was able to deal with the issues in a consistent manner. The coach faced motivational issues from players as a result of poor attendance and adverse weather conditions whilst clarification of roles and responsibilities for players was essential for individual and team development.en_GB
