The Impact of Reflection on coaching practise of novice Taekwondo Coach : A personal experience

The coaching environment has been identified as a complex and episodic process (Borrie, ,Knowles, ., and Telfer, ,2005). There have been numerous methods and tools that over time have been utilised as a way to assist in the coaching process, including mentoring, coach education courses, communities of practice, experience and reflection. Various individuals from different backgrounds have recognized that reflection is a growing tool to be utilized in improving individuals’ knowledge and performance (Moon 2004). The aim of this research was to incorporate reflection and the process of reflective writing into the coaching environment of a novice Taekwondo coach. The rationale behind this study was the void of the information available on the relationship between reflection and the development of the Taekwondo coach. The research was carried out by employing an autoethnography study. The information for the study was gathered by initiating in a process of reflective writing thus providing qualitative data. The reflective writing was done over a period of six weeks for one coaching session a wek The study resulted in provided evidence that the incorporation of reflection did have a developmental effect on the coaching practices of this study. The study reveal three emerging areas that developed, these areas were the (a) development and awareness of coaching method (b) relationships with athletes and (c) confidence.
