CASE STUDY ANALYSIS: THE INFLUENCE OF A PARENT-COACH, CHILD-ATHLETE RELATIONSHIP ON AN ELITE TRAMPOLINE GYMNAST

Guided by the coach-athlete literature, this study explores the way in which being involved in a parent-coach, child-athlete relationship has affected their sporting and family experience. With a lack of in-depth literature on this type of relationship regarding elite athletes, this study’s sample included an elite international trampolinist and his father who was an Olympic coach and ex-international performer. An in-depth interview was conducted with both participants which allowed qualitative data to be collected and the responses were content analysed. Analysis revealed that the dyads were not only close in the gym but had a very close father-son relationship outside of it due to the amount of time spent with each other. Results also indicated that despite sometimes feeling trapped in a sport the coach used to love, he got great satisfaction seeing his son grow up and being involved in what he was proud of his son doing. This study provides an insight into a successful parent-coach, child-athlete relationship, its ups and downs and outcomes of the dyad.
