The analysis of recorded boxing matches could identify differences between weight divisions. The aim of this study was to determine differences and similarities between 3 weight divisions; based on the use of technical elements of the bouts. A Sample of 24 male elite boxers, 8 from the bantamweight division, 8 middleweight and 8 heavyweights was used. Nine punch types were determined to obtain raw data, were the specific variables could then be drawn. Differences between weights for the punch types and combination types were observed using Kruskal-Wallis test and a Friedman test was used to identify trends within the data for all the weights combined. Results showed that heavyweights threw significantly less LB shots than the other weights; similarly they threw less SB and RB, these body shots also showed to have the greatest accuracy. Additionally, it was observed that generally punches in combinations had a greater success rate, with the L showing a significant difference. The heavyweights threw the least variety of combinations, with 12 combinations accounting for the majority of combinations thrown, similarly the same result was observed with the middleweights. On the other hand, the bantamweights showed greatest variety, with these 12 combinations accounting for the minority. The data emphasises the differences and similarities between weights categories and also highlights the significance of throwing more punches in both single punches and in combinations in order to get into closer range to throw bigger shots. Prospective studies need to be considered to investigate the association between attacking variables alongside defensive variables.
