Abstract
This study attempts to make sense of the relationships between power and discourse using a Foucauldian theoretical lens. By using the theories of discipline power an attempt was made to make sense of the different trends that occur across different individual and team sports at University performance level. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 2 coaches and 3 athletes that were part of a University performance sport. Using the work of Foucault (1977), the discussion highlights the key findings of power and discourse and the effect that the use of surveillance and coach goal setting has on an athlete in that environment. Finally, the implications of this research are discussed and further suggestions for research are made.
