This dissertation explores the effects upon today’s society caused by the fashion industry and the trends which it creates. Through each chapter I have adopted the style and tone of various journalistic publications which were accessible to wide audiences, in order to demonstrate the active role of fashion within society. Chapter 1: "Boots and Bags Beat the Recession – South Wales Echo." considers the idea that fashion is bringing Wales out of a double dip recession. Using interviews with both, self-employed and a chain-branch retail managers, to support my argument. Chapter 2: "Sketchy adverts, skimpy swimwear and matching mother and daughter outfits - is the fashion industry making kids too sexy, too soon, in order to cash in? – Daily Mail Online" I address the issues surrounding the exploitation of children within the fashion industry and highlight that it is becoming an area of concern. Chapter 3: "Dressed to Kill – Cosmopolitan" demonstrates the implications that certain fashion and beauty trends have upon women’s long term health. This argument is supported with the use of new scientific evidence, as well as my own social research into the influence fashion has upon women. Within my critical commentary and reflection, I draw upon the experiences of my creative constructive process. I also address key factors concerning the implications of journalism, ethics and the writing process, with special references to Wynford Hicks and Sharon Wheeler.
