Abstract
The aim of the study was to identify successful components of lineouts for elite level rugby union. Insufficient research has been conducted on this particular topic area considering the ever-increasing importance of this asset in rugby union. Therefore detailed analysis of four hundred and sixty nine lineouts performed by New Zealand, Australia and South Africa was assessed allowing for true behaviors of elite teams at the lineout to be observed. Prior to data collection, an intra-reliability study was performed evaluating the data collection system. With some modification to performance indicators that scored a fair or poor Kappa value, authentic performance indicators for successful lineout performance were found and noted in the study. From one hundred and eighty one performance indicators, twelve indicators were found significantly different between New Zealand, Australia and South Africa. A difference was also discovered with lower mean and standard deviation trigger times between successful and unsuccessful lineouts. Results from the study were presented in a logical format providing meaningful results to coaches/players. Future research was guided to assess regional/club and age-grade lineout performance to evaluate if the findings from the study transfers to all levels of performance in rugby union.
