Does having a relationship with the coach, outside the coaching domain have an effect on the coach-athlete relationship?

Within sport many parent-coaches frequently occur, these relationships in particular have not been heavily considered within coaching research. Therefore there is a lack of knowledge and understanding for coaches in this situation. The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of a parent/coach- athlete/child relationship from the practitioners’ perspective, in specific aimed to uncover the feelings and emotions involved in this type of coach-athlete relationship and inquire, from the coaches’ and athlete’s perspectives, how the emotions and feelings affect the success of the relationship and the athletes’ performance. The study examined three relationships involving six participants, three coaches (parents) and three athletes (daughter and sons). Semi-structured interviews were undertaken in order to examine and investigate their views on the phenomenon. The results identified four themes involved in the relationships: Enhanced emotions, expanded coaching opportunities, effects on the coach-athlete relationship and parental involvement. These included both positive and negative aspects of a parent/coach-child/athlete relationship. The study concludes that the parent/coach-child/athlete relationship differs to a standard coach-athlete relationship and the outside relationship can both positively and negatively affect different areas of the relationship. This includes areas such as enhanced emotions, expanded coaching opportunities, effects on the coach-athlete relationship and parental involvement. Any further research should continue to investigate varied and different parent/coach-child/athlete relationship. Authors could also cover more in depth, the effects on performance.
