This study critically evaluates the effectiveness of the governments initiative of the 5x60 scheme in order to increase participation in extracurricular physical activities and also school sport. The study has confirmed that the 5x60 scheme attempts to progress physical activity provision further, through offering alternative activities that the children have chosen rather than traditional team games. The study also agreed with previous findings that there are still certain barriers which have a negative effect on children's participation rates in extracurricular physical activities and that there is still a mixed and varied in participation levels for children in extracurricular physical activities. Greater understanding has been achieved on the different levels of participation in various extracurricular activities. Also, in order to achieve higher levels of participation the 5x60 officer must attempt to overcome any barriers children have to participation. The main aim of the 5x60 scheme is to provide various physical activities in an encouraging environment in order to increase individuals participation in physical activity and to live a healthy and active lifestyle.
