Empowerment: An illusion or reality?

Athlete empowerment within the coaching context is a notion that needs further analysis to reveal the ambiguities inherent in it, if we are to better understand it and increase the accessibility of it (Jones, 2006). As such, this study was conducted in order to examine whether the use of empowerment within the coaching context is presented as an illusion to athletes, or a reality. Coaches (2) and athletes (4) involved in team and individual sports were interviewed, in order to examine the coaches’ use of empowerment towards their athletes, using semi-structured interviews. All interview questions revolved around the use of empowerment, as well as the participants sporting background, through use of open-ended questions as much as possible in order to gain as deeper knowledge and experience as possible. After all interviews had taken place, they were then transcribed in order to draw results from them. Research findings found that empowerment was most definitely portrayed successfully by both coaches towards their athletes, however there were many varying differences between team and individual sports, to which contributed towards the delivery of empowerment. When analysing results it was clear that both coaches presented empowerment as ‘an illusion’ in differing situations in order for their athletes to convey an answer to which they deemed suitable. As, recent research, described by Jones et al (2004) suggested how despite involving athletes in aspects of decision-making, many top-level coaches confess to only giving them an illusion of empowerment. Recommendations for future research include further exploring the use of empowerment through a wider range of sports, with a higher number of participants for data collection.
