MetadataShow full item record
This study explores the perceived barriers and motivations facing mature students in two FE colleges in South Wales, it explores the differences in these perceptions between the students and the lecturers. Drawing on the work of Malcolm Knowles (1980) and his work in the field of andragogy this study also explores the relationship between teaching style and the learner identities of mature students. Using a two tier, mixed method exploratory design frame, students filled in questionnaires and participated in interviews to explore their views. The study found that careers motivated mature students and links it to the economic determinist view of government policies since 1997 that influence this. It shows that their biggest barrier they faced related to childcare and the home college balance. A difference between the student and teacher perceptions was highlighted insofar as, teachers view the developmental role of education as being important. It demonstrates that students and teachers understand that the learning needs of adult learners are different from those of traditional age students.
