This paper presents an empirically informed chronological account of the development of coaching in Welsh rugby union. Drawing upon oral history accounts from all of the surviving national coaches (only Carwyn James is deceased), it demonstrates the development of elite level coaching in Wales. The distinctive methodological particularity of the paper lies in the contribution of key actors which was secured through 'insider access' to the 'practice community'.
