The Welsh Assembly Government are implementing a new early years curriculum based oh child initiated, play based learning, which takes place in the indoor and outdoor environments. The Framework for Children's Learning for 3 to 7 years olds in Wales (WAG, 2008 a) emphasises outdoor learning which has led to many schools redesigning their settings and ways of working. This study examines infant and primary school teachers' perceptions of the new developments conceming outdoor learning, with particular reference to the Forest School initiative. Drawing on data from questionnaires and interviews conducted at three schools, it is suggested that teachers appear outwardly positive about outdoor leaming and Forest School. However, funding and resourcing emerged as barriers to optimal use of the outdoor environment within the school setting. Although Forest School was viewed positively by teachers within the study, comments reveal a lack of training and information means the initiative is not always fully understood. One school included in the study had an on site forest classroom, the experiences and understanding of the practitioners were markedly different to those at the other two schools. The study considers the wider benefits of allowing early years' practitioners to experience Forest School as part of the new Foundation Phase curriculum.
