This paper was a culmination of a programme of research into the ‘longswing’ which combined an ecologically valid interdisciplinary approach to understanding skill development in men’s artistic gymnastics. It incorporated research from two conference presentations in 2006. The first, an invited symposium presentation at the Engineering of Sport Conference in Munich, reported a modified inverse dynamic modelling technique. The second, an award winning presentation at the International Society of Biomechanics in Sports Conference in Salzburg, utilised the modified kinetic analysis to highlight two distinct categories of progressions based on the musculoskeletal demands placed on gymnasts.
