Two novel statistical techniques for notational analysis were presented. The first can be used to compensate for potential inaccuracies due to different playing times, for example, due to substitutions; the second enables performance profiles to be presented via medians and confidence limits for population medians. Both of these techniques addressed limitations in the extant literature. This work prompted an invitation for James to present in a symposium at the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences annual conference, Bath (2007). James designed the study, formulated the transformation technique, led the data analysis, and edited the manuscript.en
