Abstract
A process tracing methodology devised by Patrick and James was used to analyse the goals and strategies of teams dealing with problems. A temporal patterning of the associated activities revealed differences in team strategies. Some of these techniques were used in a novel assessment of team competencies in rugby and presented at the 2nd International Congress on Psychology Applied to Sport; Madrid, Spain (2003). James was involved in data collection and analysis, undertook all statistical analyses and edited the manuscript. This research was supported by the Industry Management Committee of the UK HSC Coordinated Programme of Nuclear Safety Research.
