The aim of this dissertation was to formulate a Best Practice Approach to dealing with the accommodation challenge when responding to multi-day mega events using the Case study of the Ryder Cup. To achieve this the researcher created the following objectives; to critically review the relevant literature and undertake an exploratory case study into how accommodation was dealt with in relation to the Ryder Cup. The methods used to carry out the research were in the form of qualitative semi structured interviews. The review of current literature surrounding the topic gave guidance when developing the questions for the primary research of this dissertation The main findings were that accommodation providers local to the 2010 Ryder Cup in Newport had a choice either to sign up with Ryder Cup Travel Services and offer their hotel rooms as part of a package or offer their services independently. The research found that those who sold through RCTS received lower than what they usually would for their rooms whereas those that sold independently tended to raise their prices. It should be noted that the research found can not be deemed conclusive due to the small sample of accommodation providers interviewed in the primary research. A best practice approach has been formed based on the results of the interviews, highlighting the positive areas and adjusting those areas that could be considered as weaknesses of the accommodation strategy during the Ryder Cup.
