A variety of existant research has shown the effects irrelevant sound has on cognitive abilities such as memory. However, irrelevant sound does not contain semantic information like music with lyrics does. The effects of music with lyrics, including preference, in a cognitive task setting, namely a word comprehension, has not been explored. Therefore this study tested this by asking participants to complete word comprehensions in the presence of four sound conditions.
