Character, virtue and physical education
Abstract
This paper builds upon a body of work related to Carwyn Jones’s PhD thesis which critically evaluates both the moral and psychological conceptions of character which dominates the physical education literature. It offers an alternative theoretically informed account of character and an accompanying pedagogical prescription for teaching virtue through physical education. The work in this paper formed the basis of an invited presentation at the European College of Sport Science annual congress in Lausanne, 2006.
