The author has carried out this research to evaluate the positive and negative impacts of medium-scaled community festivals on the host community and to analyse the strategies put in place to minimise the negative impacts and maximise the positive impacts. The aims of the research were to holistically evaluate the range of impacts of medium-scaled community festivals on the local community, to critically assess the strategies employed by the event organiser to improve the impacts on the local community and to evaluate the short term and long term effects of the Bridgend County Show and Cowbridge Food and Drink Festival and recommend changes. The objectives of the research were to analyse the literature around festivals and the positive and negative impacts, to critically examine the strategies and tasks carried out to minimise negative effects and maximise positive effects and to evaluate the effectiveness of the strategies adopted by local festivals. Within the content of the dissertation there will be an introduction, a literature review, a methodology, a results section, a discussion and a conclusion. To carry out research the author used structured interviews and questionnaires. The author interviewed event organisers and a member of the local authority while the questionnaires were filled out by visitors of community festivals, locals who lived in the area that the community festivals were taking place and local businesses situated in the host community. From carrying out the research the author has found that for a medium-scaled community festival to be a success and for the host community to reap all the benefits of the festival, the event organiser needs to make sure that the correct strategies are in place to minimise the negative impacts and to maximise the positive impacts. The author believes that event organisers should communicate more with the locals of the host community to find out what they believe could be done to make the festival more enjoyable for visitors, not so disruptive for locals and a success for the event organisers. The author also found that for the Bridgend County Show and Cowbridge Food and Drink Festival the main negative impacts of these community festivals were traffic congestion, litter and for those aged 50 plus noise pollution and the main positive impact was seen to be the economic benefits. Even though the event organisers had a number of strategies in place, the author can see that there is still room for improvement in certain areas and the author believes that from carrying out the research it can help event organisers understand where there needs to be improvements made.
