Constructing expert knowledge: A case study of a top-level professional soccer coach

By adopting a life-story approach with an elite football coach, Steve Harrison, this paper problematises the current dominant rationalistic approach to sports coaching. Through recourse to interview transcripts and field-notes related to the subject’s experiences, the article portrays the dynamic social constructivist nature of coaching within a highly competitive context. Jones was responsible for conceptualising and designing the study, in addition to writing the final draft. Understanding how such coaches’ construct, and continue to construct, their professional knowledge holds implications for future coach education programmes.
