Coaching redefined: An everyday pedagogical endeavour

Utilising a novel conversational format, this paper argues for a re-conceptualisation of coaching as a socio-pedagogic endeavour. Within it, ER (Educational Relationships) engages CS (Coaching Science) as to the nature of coaching, claiming that at its heart lies a pedagogic relationship between coach and athlete and, in particular, the micro-interactions that occur between them. The paper was developed from a presentation delivered at the British Educational Research Association Conference in 2004 and formed the basis of an invited lecture given at the University of Limerick (Ireland) in 2007 as a part of their PE-PAYS lecture series.
