Dietary vitamin A intakes of students

Background: this paper assesses what the intakes of vitamin A for students are. It has been reported that students consume more energy than that which is recommended but have relatively low intakes of vitamins. There is limited data on what the vitamin A intakes for students are but literature on what their dietary intakes are have been reviewed to assess what their intakes could be. Objectives: the aim of this study is to determine the vitamin A intakes of students and what their attitudes towards vitamin A are. It also assesses whether their energy intakes influenced the amount of vitamin A that they consumed. Methods: the dietary vitamin A intakes were assessed by using dietary assessment tools namely a 24 hour recall and a food frequency questionnaire (FFO). All the data was completed by the participant and the information was analysed using Netwisp dietary analysis programme and SPSS. Results: most of the students (74%) did not meet the mean RNI of 650 ug/day according to the recommendations set by the dietary reference values panel. On average more females had a lower RNI compared to males. Also most of the vitamin A that was consumed came from vegetables, particularly from broccoli and carrots. Conclusion: the results have shown that the dietary intakes of vitamin A for most of the students who took part in the study were below the recommended RNI of 650 ug/day. Also when asked about vitamin A and its sources most of the students confessed that they did not know which foods were good sources and they did not know how important the vitamin was.
