This publication presented a novel physiological response associated with oxygen consumption during exhaustive arm crank ergometry. In contrast to conventional theories, data demonstrated a non-linear, excess gain in oxygen consumption during ramp tests (6 and 12 W/min) performed to volitional exhaustion. Irrespective of the ramp rate used, the relative oxygen cost, work rate and heart rate at which the excess oxygen consumption emerged was similar between tests, suggesting there to be an underlying and common metabolic explanation. Smith conceived the idea, assisted in the collection of data, analysed the data, and wrote a substantial portion of the paper.
