Abstract
Agriculture has been through many changes in recent years. At present many farmers' futures are not secure. Farm diversification is one farm adjustment strategy which is supported by government policy. The aim of this study is to critically analyse available literature regarding changes in farming, rural tourism and diversification and relate the findings to Gilestone Farm, Talybont-on-Usk, Brecon. This site was chosen as it met the criteria of the study and provided a good example of diversification into the hospitality industry by the creation of a caravan and camping park alongside a family-run farm. The method used for investigation at Gilestone Farm was two in-depth interviews with the co-owners of the site. The main findings of the study were; that the total product package process is in place to ensure the site can offer enough to attract and retain visitors; the attitude and opinions of the farmer at Gilestone Farm were unexpected and found not to be as previously perceived; Mr Thomas is positive and recognizes diversification as the sensible way forward; unforeseen problems can arise which can jeopardise the business future, (as has occurred at Gilestone Farm) and the future of farming is very uncertain and the serious economic difficulties facing farmers is leaving many with no option but to diversify. The main conclusion was that the farming industry is changing and many farmers are facing an uncertain future. Diversification can offer another form of income which is some instances can enable farming families to remain on their farms.
