This study used a novel equipment configuration to examine how variations in 1) external work load and 2) crank configuration influenced muscle activity and the pattern of torque production during arm crank ergometry. Results demonstrated the complexity of the kinetic chain during this exercise mode with muscles of the arms shoulder and legs becoming engaged. Findings also illustrated how the different crank configurations altered the force production profile throughout the crank cycle. Smith conceived the idea and helped in assembling to novel test rig, collecting and analysing the data and wrote the vast majority of the publication.

The effects of an increasing versus constant crank rate on peak physiological responses during incremental arm crank ergometry.
Price, M.J.; Bottoms, L.; Smith, Paul M.; Nicholettos, A. (2011)We examined the effects of concomitant increases in crank rate and power output on incremental arm crank ergometry. Ten healthy males undertook three incremental upper body exercise tests to volitional exhaustion. The first ... -
The development of a windsurf-specific ergometer to test the pump action in windsurfing
White, Thomas (University of Wales Institute Cardiff, 2010)The aim of the study was to develop a windsurf-specific ergometer to test the pump action in windsurfing. The study investigated the peak physiological effects of sail pumping and compared them to data obtained from a ... -
The Effects of Music on Physiological Responses in Sub Maximal Arm Crank Ergometry
Smith, Jamie (Cardiff Metropolitan University, 2013)Previous research has provided mixed results in regards to the use of music as an ergogenic aid. Some studies have found a positive impact of music on performance, whereas others have found none. This study focused on ...
