This study used a novel equipment configuration to examine how variations in 1) external work load and 2) crank configuration influenced muscle activity and the pattern of torque production during arm crank ergometry. Results demonstrated the complexity of the kinetic chain during this exercise mode with muscles of the arms shoulder and legs becoming engaged. Findings also illustrated how the different crank configurations altered the force production profile throughout the crank cycle. Smith conceived the idea and helped in assembling to novel test rig, collecting and analysing the data and wrote the vast majority of the publication.
