This dissertation is the report of research conducted by the Author, an Inspector of residential care homes. Residential Care is regulated and standards are set in relation to the quality of the environment, care practice, staffing and record keeping. The Author promotes that holidays are a valuable experience for residents of registered care homes. It is common practice for the staff of homes for adults with learning disabilities to arrange holidays for residents and the Author sought to determine whether these standards are maintained for the duration of holidays. Earlier research in the Author's area indicated that this was not the case and the new research comprised of three different methods in order to find out if this is the situation in other areas of the South West of England. The findings of the research indicate that Local Authorities assume that standards will be met and they have not set specific standards. In reality however, it would appear that some homes do not maintain staffing levels or risk-assess the premises chosen as the venue for a holiday.
