This cross sectional study, supported by funding from the Amateur Swimming Federation of Great Britain, investigated the equivocal findings within the literature addressing the relationship between competitive anxiety responses and psychological skills. This was the first study to show the skills used by non-elite athletes to tackle their anxiety and, by doing so, highlighted important skill level differences in competitive stress management interventions.
