Ongoing research into improving understanding at the coaching-biomechanics interface and in particular, evidence based research into the development of skills in gymnastics prompted this paper. The Dyson Medal winning lecture at the 2006 International Society of Biomechanics in Sports congress on 'complex analyses in biomechanics' confirmed the contemporary relevance of understanding co-ordination and variability and extends the range of work in gymnastics biomechanics at UWIC. This paper is the fourth in a series of five arising from PhD research into gymnastics biomechanics. It is also the first paper to apply complex analyses of co-ordination to developing skills in gymnastics.
