BACKGROUND: There is substantial research focusing on flexibility associated with athletes in a sport environment, however searching current literature determined little research on the effect of massage on muscular flexibility. Controversy exists in the association between muscular flexibility and sport performance. RESEARCH QUESTION: The effect of massage on flexibility and performance in female basketball players. METHOD: Three objective measurements were used to assess change in flexibility post massage intervention for 8 female basketball players. Subjective measures were recorded via questionnaires focusing on self – perception of flexibility and basketball performance. RESULTS: The use of SPSS software confirmed statistically significant improvement in flexibility for all three objective measurements as well as both subjective measurements. CONCLUSION: Further research is required to confirm improvements in a larger population size and to limit the risk of extraneous factors.
