The purpose of this study was to explore the importance of both coaching styles and empowerment and how these factors are used within team and individual sports. Meanwhile, seeing whether they had an effect on the overall effectiveness of coaching as a whole. Coaches were interviewed who had a minimum of a level 2 coaching qualification and had also played the sport, resulting in the participants having a good background knowledge prior to the study. Two participants were from a team sport and two from an individual allowing for comparisons to be made if necessary. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with the use of open ended questions to gain as much information as possible with regards to coaching styles and empowerment. Having carried out the interviews, they were then transcribed so that data was clearly presented and it could be further anaylsed. The main findings within the research were that the main coaching style used with younger athletes within both team and individual sport was autocratic, this was because coaches felt that it was necessary for them to be in control as athletes were of a young age and had not enhanced the correct skills. In contrast, they felt that by adopting a democratic approach this was best suited to older athletes as this enabled them to gain an insight into the coaches’ role and allow them to gain responsibility within sessions. When anaylsing the results it conveyed that empowerment was of importance, as it allowed for athletes to gain a sense of belonging. However, coaches adopted an empowerment approach very little due to some responses from athletes. If future research was to occur, a greater number of participants from varying coaching levels would take part, to enable greater information for data collection.en_US
