Examining a Coach Education Programme within Football – The FAW Level 2 ‘C’

Trudel, Lyle and Rynne (2009) contest that coach education is only a small part of a coaches’ education to becoming an effective coach. However, with the ever growing uncertainty overshadowing coach education to prepare coaches for the realities of the coaching environment (Saury & Durand, 1998; Jones & Wallace, 2005, Jones, 2006) this current study has aimed to examine a coach education programme within Football (FAW Level 2 'C' certificate) to identify whether or not it is preparing coaches for the realities of the coaching environment. In order to identify this, the study used semi structured interviews, interviewing nine coaches that attended the exact same course (FAW Level 2 'C' certificate) which was completed six months prior to the current study. The study concluded by identifying that the coach education programme prepares the coach to a certain degree (e.g. feedback, experiential learning, COP’s and other disciplines) although it was concluded that these positive aspects identified, could be developed more in the attempt to prepare the coach more efficiently. However, the study also concluded by identifying negative aspects within the coach education programme. It was discussed that the teaching methods implemented by the coach educators were not engaging, whereby the coaches lost interest. Furthermore, it was discussed that the assessment procedure was not realistic to the real environments the coaches operate in. The findings throughout the study have highlighted previous knowledge but also new knowledge that can inform the coach education programme potential ways in which to develop, therefore preparing the coaches more efficiently for the realities of the coaching environment.
