dc.description.abstractThe Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS, 2007, 2008a, 2009) states that the London 2012 Olympic Games differs from the previous 26 Games because "it has set a historical precedent in that the host country’s government has made a commitment to use the Olympic Games to affect social change on a mass scale and to deliver a range of legacies not just for London but for the whole of the UK" (Girginov, 2013). This research study’s aim was to administer an investigation into the perceptions of PE teachers on the effect of the London 2012 Olympic Legacies on participation in Physical Education, curricular and extra-curricular, at a Gloucestershire LA based secondary school. The rationale for this investigation comes following criticism in the media that the effects of the Olympic Legacies had already diminished, as little as a year on from the Games. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with five teachers within the PE department at the school, questioning them on the legacies that were relevant to young people and sport participation. The results showed that although the aims and aspirations of the London 2012 legacies could be claimed, this investigation was unable to conclude that the Olympics were accountable for this process. Much emphasis was put upon the work of the individual teachers and strategies applied within the PE department and their development of the pupils. The majority of the teachers interviewed also believed that it is now too late to harness the effects of the London 2012 Olympic Legacies. Further research in a wider variety of schools in different areas of the country could be useful in order to gain a better insight into the overall effect of the Legacies upon the nation as a whole.en_US
